Tale of Twins is the first of three books, and Joe Kidd swings big. The core idea a Lakota family finding the biggest resource deposit ever and having to decide what to do with it could have just been about politics and corporations. Instead, Kidd makes it about family. The part that sold me was Tommy’s 24-mile walk. He just walks. Through cold, through doubt, across land that matters to him. There’s no epic battle there, but it felt like the heart of the book to me. It’s about showing up, even when it’s hard, because the land and your people are worth it. The pacing is slow at times and it’s clearly setting up a much bigger story, but the ties to Lakota tradition and sovereignty keep it grounded. If you’re looking for sci-fi fantasy that actually says something new about power and belonging, this is it.
